BEATING THE WINTER BLUES
Colds and flu are everywhere it seems and we are all stressed and exhausted with the end of the financial year.
Our immune system stands on guard, waiting to defend our body from the invasion of viruses and other nasties. When this amazing system is overloaded, it crashes and that is when we succumb to some of those dreaded lurgies.
Many Australians do not have strong immune systems, due to many factors such as, pollution, stress, too many drugs and poor diet. Antibiotics are prescribed and if used over a long period of time, these drugs can depress the immune system.
So, what do we do?
Our immune systems must be built and maintained from the inside out. What you put into your body will either add to or detract from this ability. Keeping up with your intake of highly nutritious food and supplements will be a good start. Essential oils can also play a role as well.
Extensive research and clinical trials have shown that essential oils are very effective for treating respiratory problems and supporting the immune system.
The best methods for application of essential oils are through inhalations, chest and back massage, compresses and diffusers.
Antiseptic and Antibacterial
For colds, flu, sore throats, tonsillitis and other throat infections, diffuse eucalyptus, pine and lemon essential oils.
Antispasmodic
For calming coughing spasms - as in asthma, dry cough, whooping cough, diffuse or make a chest rub using cedarwood, clary sage, cypress and eucalyptus. Beware of allergies in relation to asthma, and do not use steam inhalations for asthmatics.
Expectorants
These oils promote ejection of phlegm by coughing or spitting - diffuse of make a chest rub. Try fennel, helichrysum, eucalyptus, frankincense, myrrh and Scotch pine.
Immunostimulants
Essential oils can support and strengthen the immune system in two ways.
·by directly inhibiting the threatening micro-organisms or
·by stimulating the immune system
Try eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, rosemary, tea tree in the diffuser, in the bath or as a body rub.
Associated Problems
Headaches -Diffuse or rub a blend of 2 drops of each of lavender & peppermint essential oils in 5mlc carrier oil - massaged into temples.
Feeling Cold and Shivery
Take a warm to hot bath and use warming oils - rosemary, black pepper and ginger.
BE PROACTIVE!!!
Don't wait for viruses to catch up with you. Protect yourself by wearing essential oils every day. Raise your vibrations with frankincense especially. Use it as a pulse point perfume or mix it in with your skin care. I put frankincense and lavender into my Wrinkle Guard oil!!
